mCommerce Continues to Surge in America. Is YOUR Brand Ready to Deliver?

Mobile is truly where it’s at in 2017 America. Including mobile commerce (aka mCommerce). In a fascinating new report, comScore released eCommerce findings and data from the fourth quarter of 2016, and some of the data related to mCommerce is truly eye-popping. The data demonstrated that more “traditional” eCommerce itself remains incredibly powerful and valuable in our society today. During the fourth quarter of 2016 alone, U.S. consumers spent $86.6 billion on their home and work PCs – a surge of 13 percent, year-over-year, from fourth quarter of 2015.

But from a growth perspective, mCommerce is even more attention-getting. In the final quarter of 2016, mCommerce spending (on smartphones and tablets) reached a whopping $22.7 billion – which was not only a massive number, but represented an immense 45-percent surge, year-over-year, from fourth quarter of 2015.

Overall in the final quarter of 2016, mobile accounted for 21 percent of total digital commerce dollars (which grew 18 percent from the previous period in 2015 to reach a stunning $109.3 billion). This robust growth rate marked mobile’s highest-recorded share of online sales for a single quarter since comScore started measuring mCommerce “way back” in 2010. It was also up from 17 percent over the previous year – and well above the four percent back in 2010.
